Creating a BRAIN-BASED ROBOT: Our Ultimate Goal
"Intuition" is the most attractive aspect of the brain. Our intuition is not merely a combination of past memories. It arises from a close coupling of past knowledge and the situated cognition of current events. Such a dynamic link between the past, the present, and the future is sustained by information flow throughout the environment, the body and the brain. We study brain-inspired robotics as a methodology for intelligence dynamics.
Bridging between brain science and engineering, in the viewpoint of a synthetic approach, we investigate three levels; neuro-morphological models, functional-unit-based models and particle-flow dynamics models by implementing to a robotic testable platform, which is a combination of remote-controlled mobile robots (body) and real-time simulators of those models as the controller (brain). The platform may allow us to monitor a lifelong developmental process of the brain. The research target is to examine capabilities of the resource management in the brain parallel processing and functionalities of our heterogeneous intelligence, or personal difference, acquired through experiences and different emotional reactions. The ultimate goal is to understand how we have individual intellect and why self-consciousness emerges, and then to apply this kind of knowledge to build an engineering system, or a human-machine symbiosis to be better in the coming future.
