Research
in our laboratory focuses primarily on microorganisms,
of which there is an enormous variety, including nutrient-producing
microbes like amino acids, microbes used in fermenting
food products and those used to break down toxic substances.
In identifying microorganisms, the genome sequence is
the deciding factor. In this program, students learn
how to search genome databases to identify the type
of microorganism and how to estimate the structure and
functions of new genes and proteins. The basic skills
acquired are invaluable in any field that involves microorganisms
including the making of medicals, food and industrial
products, and the cleaning up the environment. With
the advent of the genome era, the domain of life sciences
within engineering as a whole has broadened considerably.
For students in the engineering field, graduate school
is the perfect time to explore the world of living organisms. |
