Learning from the brain to create intelligence for robots living with humans.

We develop AI systems by integrating multiple functions for the emergence of intelligence,
toward the realization of robots living with humans.
Current AI requires large amounts of training data and struggles to adapt to personal situations from a few experiences. We develop AI that integrates memory-related brain functions to realize learning from a few experiences, and further integrate it with current AI to reproduce the learning paradigm of the human brain.
We focus on reservoir computing, which has low training cost and suits edge AI. We extend its functions to boost performance and also use it as a prefrontal cortex model for brain-inspired AI. We further apply it as an approach to making large-scale AI, such as language models, lightweight.
We explore applications of brain-inspired AI and reservoir computing, especially in the edge domain, using home service robots HSR and Kachaka as experimental platforms. We also develop AI robotics technologies for innovative biophilic design, toward the co-existence of humans, nature, and robots.

In collaboration with Hibikino-Musashi@Home, we use home service robots such as TOYOTA HSR and Kachaka as experimental platforms — your AI runs in the real world, not only in simulation.
Interdisciplinary themes spanning brain models, machine learning, and edge implementation, in close collaboration with the Research Center for Neuromorphic AI Hardware.
As a new lab, students work closely with the PI, who carefully supports them from topic design to paper writing.
Members come from other universities, technical colleges, and abroad. Any background is welcome.

TOYOTA HSR (in collaboration with Hibikino-Musashi@Home), Kachaka, and SO-101 robot arms are available as research platforms. A 3D printer is also available for creating robot parts, sensor mounts, and experimental fixtures.
Edge AI implementation environment with FPGA boards such as ZCU102 and KR260.
Every member is provided with a MacBook and an external monitor. For research on deep learning, language models, robot foundation models, and related topics, we use both on-premises and cloud-based HPC resources.
